第一阶段为成都选拔赛初赛。有来自成都市14个区（市）县的39个学校的60支辩论代表队参加了初赛。初赛辩题为Mobile phones have brought people closer together vs Mobile phones have moved people further apart. 手机拉近了人搖了搖頭们的距离, 还是让人与人的距還好他們离更远了？经过激烈角逐，32支队伍进入决赛，决赛辩题为The benefits of artificial intelligence outweigh its harmful effects vs The harmful effects of artificial intelligence outweigh its benefits。使用人工智能是利大于弊，还是弊大于利？比赛采用刀鞘惡魔积分赛和淘汰赛制，最终我家少主說了决出冠军、亚军、季军、前四强、前八强、前十六强。
Warm congratulations to Ma Jiyue and Han Nianqi from Class One Grade One on winning the championship in the final of Chengdu Selection.
In order to promote cultural and educational exchange between Chengdu and its U.S. sister cities and friendly cooperative cities, and to provide a platform for Chinese and American youth for communication, Chengdu Municipal Foreign Affairs Office and Chengdu Education Bureau held the “China (Chengdu) - U.S. Sister Cities Youth Debate Challenge” in Chengdu in 2016, 2017 and 2019 and is hosting the event again in 2020.
This competition is oriented to senior high school students in Chengdu and its U.S. sister cities. The participants who are selected from “Chengdu Selections” will get the chance to debate with the outstanding teams recommended by U.S. sister cities over the same debate.
32 teams proved themselves highly skillful and tactful over "The benefits of artificial intelligence outweigh its harmful effects vs The harmful effects of artificial intelligence outweigh its benefits" in the final of Chengdu Selection. Through the points competition and elimination competition, the top 16, top 8, top 4, third place, second place and champion teams were decided in turn. After several rounds of fierce competition, the winners of the first, second and third places were officially announced in the final on the afternoon of 15th, Nov. Ma Jiyue and Han Nianqi from Chengdu Experimental Foreign Languages School won the championship of Chengdu Selections with their exceptional performance including excellent English debating skills and amazing composure on the stage.
It’s hoped that through this debate event, the youth from both countries can broaden their views, improve their competence, and more importantly, deepen mutual understanding and further develop friendship.

We look up at the stars in the sky, but we also come down to earth at the same time. In this day and age, as a teenager, we should not only pay attention to immediate learning, but also look at the world. We will eventually get into society. Only by thinking and analyzing the present situation can we understand how to change and develop in the future. This debate brings us far more than the championship which we won. It helps us broaden our views and look forward to the future.
This debate offered us teenagers a platform where we met new friends and discussed the development of our society and the world situation. Personally, it was a great chance for me to broaden my horizons. Not only did it push me outside my comfort zone, but also it enabled me to do impromptu speeches related to topics which were never of interest to me. In the whole process, I also learnt how to deal with pressure properly and efficiently. Mostly importantly, as the debate went on, a deep and lasting relationship formed between my partner and I. And I understood what cooperation really meant. Overall, it was really beneficial.
My original intention for participating in this contest was to deepen my understanding of PF debate through practice and thus pave the way for further expansion. However, during the process I’ve learnt so much that I’ve never expected. From learning the rules of PF Debate, the improvement of my spoken English to the further study of debate topics and having a real debate, all these mean a lot to me. Moreover, I really appreciate my partner Selina for having such a wonderful cooperation with her. Though the final result doesn't seem perfect, the process itself is significant enough.
Before the competition, all we know about Public Forum is a little theoretical knowledge. Being actually involved in the debate has not only taught us the rules and techniques, but also it has improved our ability from a variety of aspects. For instance, during the preparation time we had to learn how to search for the most helpful, accurate and persuasive evidence to support our views and how to make rebuttals towards our own contentions of both sides and choose the best ones in the formal debate. Take crossfire for another example. We practised how to act according to different circumstances and express our logic link clearly. We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers who have offered us great help and a big thank-you to our opponents for their fantastic performance!
